GLS weekend trips JULY and AUGUST 2007

Let us show you places we like - our weekend trips in July and August 2007:

GLS takes care of all arrangements and a member of GLS staff will be your guide. What you pay for are the train tickets, with reductions thanks to your GLS student ID. (All excursions in addition to min. 3 activities in Berlin per week)

At the moment there are 340 students from 58 countries on campus - we are looking forward to seeing you, too, in Berlin!

Dresden - Florence on River Elbe
Distance from Berlin: 2.5 hour by train

Destroyed in World War II, Dresden has regained a lot of its former beauty: you´ll see the famous "Frauenkirche", the Semper Oper and we´ll take you to the "Gemaeldegalerie", an art museum of international fame.

Wittenberg - UNESCO World Heritage
Distance from Berlin: 1.5 hour by train

Wittenberg was home to Martin Luther who revolutionized the Christian church, and the Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach. Wittenberge is about an hour by train southeast of Berlin, and by going there you´ll also see lots of the former east German republic GDR.

Nazi camp Sachsenhausen
Distance from Berlin: 1 hour by city train

Between 1936 and its liberation by the Red Army on April 27, 1945, around 200,000 persons - political prisoners, Jews, gays, gypsies - were imprisoned there and more than half of them died.

Canoeing in Spreewald - UNESCO Biosphere
Distance from Berlin: 1.5 hour by train

"Spreewald" is a landscape absolutely unique in Central Europe: a network of hundreds of little rivers and canals inmidst beautiful forests, about 100 km south of Berlin.

WeŽll go canoeing with you there, a perfect way to explore "Spreewald" and relax a bit

Leipzig
Distance from Berlin: 1.5 hours by train

In Goethe's drama "Faust" a character calls Leipzig 'little Paris". Today Leipzig is full of galleries and cafes; and the town also has some of the finest classical music and opera in Germany - it was once home to Bach, Wagner and Mendelssohn.

DOKUMENTA Kassel
Distance from Berlin: 2.5 hours by train

The documenta is known worldwide - as the most important exhibition of contemporary art. It happens every 5 years, for 3 months in summer and it is an outdoor show:

YouŽll find art scattered all over the city, near the river, and on mount Hercules.

Kassel as a city is worth a visit, too: completely drestroyed in WW II, it combines modernist architecture with historical beauty - often in stark contrast. The area around Kassel is very beautiful, so the trainride to Kassel will be a pleasure in itself.

Hamburg
Distance from Berlin: ca. 1.5 hour by train

...the elegant port in Germany´s north. You´ll get to see "Reeperbahn", the famous red light district, the fish market and the red brick Speicherstadt in the harbour.

WeŽll take the fast train from the new "Hauptbahnhof" around 9 am, arrive in Hamburg at 10.30 am and will go back in the evening.
